FOUNDING VISION / OUR STORY

A Program Founded on a Singular Vision

The CMESL/PHSU Urology Residency Program did not begin with a committee or by chance. It started in 2003, when Dr. Gilberto Ruiz Deyá returned to Puerto Rico after completing his training and faculty work at Tulane University in New Orleans. Upon his return, he found an island with exceptional patient volume and complex pathology, but without a urology residency program capable of training specialists locally. At that moment, he made a decision: rather than sending young physicians away to train elsewhere, Puerto Rico would build a world-class training center of its own.

That vision first took shape through clinical infrastructure. Urocentro was founded not merely as a practice, but as a future academic training base intentionally designed to support residents one day. To bring this vision to life, Dr. Adrián Santana became the first to join the mission, soon followed by Dr. Javier Castillo, who added momentum in surgical innovation. The clinical foundation became complete with the incorporation of Dr. Claudio Bernaschina of Hospital Damas, expanding the academic reach into the hospital network in Ponce. Together, they created a comprehensive, high-volume urologic service equipped with modern endoscopic, laparoscopic, and diagnostic technology—meeting the clinical standards expected of any serious academic program.

Yet clinical excellence alone would not be enough to secure national recognition. The program required both academic contributions and research relevance. That turning point came through a strategic collaboration with Dr. Jaime Matta at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU). Through this partnership, the group became involved in NIH-funded U54 projects, which later expanded into a Department of Defense prostate cancer education and screening initiative dedicated to underserved regions of Puerto Rico. With these grants, publications, and academic partnerships, what began as a clinical dream evolved into a research-driven institution recognized on the national stage.

Once the clinical and academic pillars were firmly established, the final step emerged naturally: formalizing the Urology Residency Program. The accreditation process was not a mere formality—it was the culmination of two decades of clinical development, research collaboration, and physician recruitment with a singular objective: to train urologists locally at a level equal to leading programs in the continental United States of America. When the first residents matched, it marked a historic milestone: Puerto Rico was no longer exporting its talent—it was cultivating it with purpose and pride.

Today, under the leadership and founding vision of Dr. Gilberto Ruiz Deyá, the CMESL/PHSU Urology Residency Program stands as one of the most comprehensive and academically integrated urology training environments in the Caribbean. Residents now train with advanced surgical technology, participate in NIH and DoD research protocols, and contribute to academic work that redefines urologic care across the island. What began as one surgeon’s commitment is now a growing legacy—shaping the next generation of urologists who will serve Puerto Rico and beyond.
